ENDURING HEART EPISODE ONE

Mrs. Gbenga: Haneef! Get back here, I’m talking to you! How dare you walk out on your mother? Besides, all I’m saying is for your sake. Why are you troubling me so much like this? (She follows him) Haneef!

Haneef: (He turns to her in frustration) Mom! Please stay out of this. She is the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. You’re the same person who begged me several years ago not to marry a wayward person. Now that I’m finally about to settle down with the most religious woman I’ve ever seen, and you're complaining? What else do you want, Mum? Do you want me to die a bachelor? I’m tired of your complaints all the time.

Mrs. Gbenga: (She drags him to the chair) Okomi, why are you always like this? This girl we’re talking about is just a chronic pretender, pretending to be religious and using the hijab to cover up her tracks. I’d rather accept those realistic ones than that girl. Ever since you introduced her to me, I’ve never liked her — even your siblings too. Please, my son, it's not too late to call off the wedding. Please, for my sake.

Haneef: (Sadly stares at his mother) Mom! Stay out of my wife and my marital life for good. Mom! Please stay out of this. (He angrily gets up and tries to walk away)

Mrs. Gbenga: So you're walking out on me, right?

Haneef: (Pauses and sighs heavily) Mom! How on earth do you expect me to call off my wedding with my dream woman when the wedding is in one week? This is unfair oh! This is totally unfair, wallahi! But I won’t let that affect my marital life. Whether you and the rest like it or not, I will marry her, and you must treat her just like your own. She will be my wife by the grace of Allah, and she will also be the mother of my children. She will bear you your grandchildren, so get used to it. You don’t like her? That’s not my problem. What matters is that we love each other — period! This wedding must take place! It must! Have a nice day. (He walks out on her and slams the door angrily)

Mrs. Gbenga: Haneef! You just walked out on me? Haneef!

Sofiah: (She walks up to her) It’s okay, Mum. Let him be. If he won’t listen to you, then we must teach her a good lesson for turning our brother against his family. That green snake under green grass — and I must find all means to reveal her true identity to him before it’s too late. So don’t worry, Mom. This wedding must take place just like he wanted, but it won’t last — I promise you that.

Mrs. Gbenga: Why doesn’t he listen to me? Why? (About to cry)

Sofiah: Mom! Don’t cry now over that stupid girl… Please don’t cry. Everything will be fine, okay?

Mrs. Gbenga: I hope so, because I won’t let that girl ruin my son’s life with lies.

(Scene transition)

Nusaybah: (In her room chatting with her husband on the phone) My king, I just can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. I can’t even wait till next week — I feel like this is all a dream.

Haneef: Yeah.

Nusaybah: Just “yeah”? Baby, what’s wrong? Did I do something wrong?

Haneef: Not really. Just a little bit of stress, that’s all. So how is our wedding preparation going at your place?

Nusaybah: (Exhales softly) Okay o, if you say you’re fine then… Alhamdulillah, the preparation is going well. What of your place?

Haneef: Fine too.

Nusaybah: That reminds me, your mom asked me to come over.

Haneef: (Curious) What for?

Nusaybah: I also don’t know, but whatever it is, then it’s between mother and daughter. So stay out of it. Maybe this can open her heart to accept me as her own… So I’m going this evening. I hope you don’t have any problem with that?

Haneef: (Worried) Of course I’m worried! Nusaybah, as your husband-to-be, I don’t want you to go.

Nusaybah: (Confused) Excuse me? Why? This is your mom we are talking about — my mother-in-law. You want to cause chaos with this? I’m doing my possible best to make her love me… Please don’t ruin this for me. So please, don’t stop me on this.

Haneef: You are so naïve. I know what she wants to see you for… Please don’t go — unless you don’t want me to marry you.

Nusaybah: Why are you talking like this just because I want to visit your mother? Is there something you’re not telling me? What is going on, dear? Talk to me.

Haneef: (Thinking) If I should tell her the truth, this will really get her worried about her family, and I won’t let my family ruin the happiest moment of my life because of their selfish interest. (Continues typing) Absolutely nothing, my love…

Nusaybah: Then why are you preventing me from going?

Haneef: Okay then, fine — but on one condition.

Nusaybah: What is that?

Haneef: I’m coming with you.

Nusaybah: Is that really necessary? As if they’re going to bite me when I get there… Why are you acting weird?

Haneef: (Thinking) You have no idea of what’s going on, Nusaybah. Our marriage is in great danger, and I will find all means to prevent that from happening.

Nusaybah: Are you there? Hello?

Haneef: What time are you going?

Nusaybah: This evening by 4pm after Solat Asr.

Haneef: Okay then, I will come get you.

Nusaybah: (Sighs) Babe, I can go on my own now.

Haneef: I’m coming with you, and that’s final. And you must not inform her that I’m coming! Period. See you soon… I need to get back to work if we have nothing reasonable to talk about again.

Nusaybah: (Worried) Okay sir, take care of yourself… Ma salam.

Haneef: You too. (Goes offline)

Nusaybah: (She drops her phone and sighs heavily) Something is not right! Something is wrong. But why can’t he open up to me? This is the problem I mostly have with him all the time. So annoying…

*(CURTAIN)*

*AT MRS GBENGA ‟S HOUSE*

Latifah: (peep from the window) mom bro is here again! That‟s his car?

Mom: what is he doing here again? (she join her to peep) wait a minutes! So this girl informed him about coming here, she sure does have the audacity to come with

him, so this is how she wants to reveal who she really is.. hmmmm! Don‟t

worry.. I know how to deal with you silently.

Sofiah: honestly speaking I dislike everything about her, she is such a pain in the ass… gush I despise her so much.. here they come.

Mom: (fake smile) my dear daughter in law, welcome!! This one you brought your

husband with you like we are gonna attack you if you come alone?

Nusaybah: as salam alaykum ma! (failed to go on her knees but instead she embrace her) good evening ma…don‟t mind him ohh…he insisted on coming with me, I guess he misses you as well.

Haneef: (he didn‟t utter a word but instead find a place to sit) when you are done with whatever brought you here lets take our leave while I return you back to your home.

Nusaybah: ok sir, so mummy. You said you wanted to see me, ohhh! My bad, my sisters in law (she embrace them) please forgive my manners…how have you been? I messaged you on whatsapp several times but I guess you didn‟t see my message,

so how are you doing?

Sofiah: we are fine and you? (fake smile)

Haneef: (angrily staring at his sibling, suddenly his phone ring and head out) hello who is this? What do you want man? You‟ve been disturbing me lately? What Is it?

*Few minutes later*

Haneef: (approaches) I need to go somewhere, are you done with whatever brought you here?

(he enter the living room and found them as they quickly adjust their position

while Nusaybah is stunt in her seat facing down) what happened here?

Mom: nothing my son, you can take her with you now…

Haneef: (he Scan her face again) dear are you ok? (Glance at his mother) Mom!

Mom: I didn‟t say anything now, you can ask her now, abi dear did I said anything offensive?

Nusaybah: no no! ma..lets go dear (she get on her feet) thank you so much ma.. I shall be on my way now.

Haneef: he drag her hand and angrily slam the door at their faces)

Nusaybah: (tried to free herself from his hands) let me go!! What are you doing? You are hurting me? How many times will I tell you not to lay your hands on me until after our Nikkah? Let me go first you are hurting me! (He finally free her

hand) what is wrong with you?

Haneef: get in the car!

Nusaybah: what is it again?

Haneef: what did my mom said to you?

Nusaybah: (face down) nothing, she just asked how the preparation is going and

how we want to organize things at our sides…

Haneef: (stares at her for few seconds) get into the car.

Nusaybah: (she obeyed and stares at the window)

Haneef: (start the car and drove away.

everything should be going alright for me, I‟m a graduate, I have my job infact I

have my own business, I‟m a practicing muslimah so everything is right about me, is there something I‟m doing that is not right? My nikkah is few days but why do I

feel something isn‟t right? my fiance‟s family loves me even if atimes they arnt that

nice to me but luckily for me we wont live together… the amazing part, we loves each other so much which is also a good thing right? I did several istikahrah before

accepting his proposal… what is going wrong? (she heard a knock at the door) yes!!

who is it should come in.

Aminah: hey sis! Sorry to disturb you but can i sleep in your room tonight?

Nusaybah: (raise her brows) why? Don‟t you have your room? Or have you

forgotten you and I are not in a good terms

Aminah: well I don‟t care about that cus past is in the past (she slam the door and

jump on the bed) so why are you still awake? Or are you talking to your prince charming?

Nusaybah: (angrily stares at her) get out of my room.

Aminah: c'mon! madam! Take It easy with me, besides you are leaving this house soon, finally!

Nusaybah: so what was that supposed to mean? Are you chasing me?

Aminah: hmmm, I‟m not here to fight you nor to quarrel, I just want to spend some quality time with you, nothing else. cus I‟m gonna miss your wahala (she rest her body on the bed while she place one of her leg on her lap) goodnight my lovely bride to be.

Nusaybah: (furious fling her her legs out of her body) you know what? get out of my room right now! Right this instant! Aminah!

Aminah: (she turn a deaf hear and cover herself up)

Nusaybah: (about to hit her again but her conscience stop her, she exhale softly) I‟m leaving your life for good so you would stay out of my life completely (she pick up her phone) why hasn‟t he called yet? Why Is he taking so long? (she give

him a call which ring several times before he finally picked it) as salam alaykum

Haneef: (deep voice) walaykum salam.

Nusaybah: are you sleeping already? I had been expecting your phone since but you

are sleeping already.

Haneef: look! It has been such a long stressful day for me and the fact that you didn‟t see my call, isn't your sense support alert you to call me then?

Nusaybah: (surprised) Is that why you are talking to me like this? Is not up to that now.

Haneef: besides we don‟t have any reasonable things to discuss tonight so why disturbing me?

Nusaybah: what is wrong with you and why are you talking to me like this? This is Nusaybah speaking oh.

Haneef: ofcourse I‟m aware of that, see good night I‟m tired (he hang up)

Nusaybah: hello!!! (she angrily hit her phone on the ground) did he just hang up on me? I swear he Is going to pay for this, how could he treats me like this when our

Nikkah is in few days? (she angrily pick up her phone and dial his number again and luckily he pick again) why did you hung up on me?

Haneef: because you are being such a pain in the ass! Is this how much you will be stressing me after our marriage?

Nusaybah: and is this how you will treat me after marriage? See how you are talking to me like I‟m nothing to you? What exactly did I do wrong this time? What has gotten over you today? You‟ ve been acting so unfair towards me… are

you tired of me already?

Haneef: if that‟s how you view then take it like that, I need to rest old lady! So please good night (he hang up again)

Nusaybah: (she smashes the phone which shattered into pieces on the ground as she pant heavily) how could he treats me like this? What has gotten over him? Wasn‟t he the same guy who knock at my door in the midnight just to

apologize and to prove how much he loves me, treats me like this now? What

exactly is going wrong? What exactly am I doing wrong? And I cant go back, I‟m not getting any younger…I cant end it now cus it‟s too late for that now, what am I

going to do?

Aminah: (listen to everything) first of all work on your anger, then maybe things might be settled… see how you broke your phone just because you are

angry… you are a woman and if you don‟t work on that now you cant have peace (before she could finish her statement she land a slap on her face) did you just slap

me? Again? (angrily get out of her bed) if you continue this way then you cant live happily… sometimes I regret to be called your sister..

Nusaybah: get out of my room right now! (she yelled at her angrily) get out! You fool!

Aminah: you are practicing muslimah lets that shows in your behavior… excuse

me (she slam the door at her face).

Nusaybah: (panting as she began to hit everywhere) I hate you! I hate all of you!

Aminah: who like you before!.

Dad: (struggling to walk out of his room) Aminah! Come over here.

Aminah: baba! (she obeyed) baba what are you doing out here? You should be sleeping.

Dad: how do you expect me to sleep when you two wouldn‟t stop fighting, and how many times do I have to warn and beg you to stay away from your sister till

she leave this house, since you cant learn to live peacefully together atleast pity my

condition, try to control your anger! It cant help you but instead destroy you.

Aminah: (exhale softly) baba is not like I don‟t want to live peacefully with her besides she is my sister but her anger issues cant help her at all, she is a woman and she need to learn to tolerate people.

Dad: if she cant tolerate people then why cant you tolerate her then since you don‟t have anger issues; you all inherited your mother‟s anger, may Allah forgive her sins

and grant her aljanat Firdaus.

Aminah: amin, ok baami, we are sorry for the trouble but you need rest and I promise not to have anything to upset her again till she leaves… I‟m sorry Baami, I don‟t like

to see you worried like this.

Dad: thank you for listening to me, your child will obey you just like you obey me… you can go back to your room while I talk to your sister.

Aminah: (worried) ahh! Baami! Please don‟t go to her right now, she is pissed off right now, I don‟t want her to hurt you more please.

Dad: well she is my daughter too and I need to calm her down with my words… you just go to your room, I cant handle this, ok?

Aminah: (sigh heavily) ok sir, good night sir.

Dad: goodnight my dear, don‟t forget your adhkar!

Aminah: I wont! (she responded and slam the door).

Dad: ( take a deep breath and drive the wheelchair into her room) as salam alaykum my dear.

Nusaybah: (crying) walaykum salam! Who is it? (she shout angrily)

Dad: I‟m the one, your father! Open the door I need to speak to you..

Nusaybah: (quickly wipe her tears and move to the door) Baami! You are still

awake (she opens the door)

Dad: how do you expect me to sleep when you two are shouting at eachother, you old ladies, how do you expect me to have wonderful night rest (he struggles into her room and sit at the tip of the bed) Aduke! Aduke okin! My lovely child! (he tap

her back as she get seated) what is wrong?.

Nusaybah: (she couldn‟t hold the tears) dad I‟m just tired of everything, look at me… do I look happy to you? I don‟t know why things are going wrong when I‟m

finally achieving my dreams, dad! I always put my trust in Allah but why is this happening to me now? After all this hardship this fool had the guts to add to my

pains! Sometimes I find hard to believe she is my blood… see how other siblings behave to each other but this one give me nothing but pain, why? (she breaks down

in tears).

Dad: (he pat her back) is ok my dear, what ever you are going through as a muslim, have it at the back of your mind that this is a test from the almighty, he wants to

test your imaan and patient, whether you will turn to him again or not, I don‟t want any explanation on whats hurting you but cry everything out to Allah s.w.t.. after every hardship come ease.. and you cant solve your problems with anger but

instead worsen it, you and your sister inherited this anger from your mother and have you forgotten that same anger took her from this world? Just know that anger wont solve your problem learn to control it and you find a solution to every

problem bothering your mind. Ok?

Nusaybah: (exhale softly as she nodded) thank you so much Baami! I‟m sorry for the pains we caused you and I promise to work on that insha Allah! Thank you so much sir (she embrace him).

Dad: that‟s my Girl! Please wipe your tears, look at your beautiful face remember you are the latest bride in town… don‟t let anyone add to your pains and learn to

love your sister, you cant use an outsider as your blood, you cant trade her for anything, never! Whatever her offence might be learn to forgive and move on,

human are bound to fight but not to die… please Aduke Okin.

Nusaybah: jazakumlahu khairan baami! For your peaceful advice and words of encouragement all the time… I really appreciate your presence in my life.

Dad: I‟m just doing my duty as a father, now I shall take my leave cus my back hurts so much.

Nusaybah: (she quickly get up to assist him) lets go to your room.

Dad: (sign of relief) uhh! Thank you.

***************************

The next morning.

Haneef: where did I drop my car key? Gosh! Is this what‟s gonna make me late today? Uh! There you are, (he pick it and open the door but he found his wife to be stands by the door) gosh! (touch his chest) you startled me! (scan her from head to

toe) what are you doing in my house this early?

Nusaybah: (sadly stares at him) what is my offense? Uh? What did I ever do to deserve all this from you? Why did you hung up on me last night?

Haneef: ( take a deep breath) is that why you are here this early? Arent you going to work today? And where is your car?

Nusaybah: answer my questions please!.

Haneef: (tiredly staring at her) ok come in (he held her hand but she drag her hands away from him) what is it again?
